Our first full day of this year’s staycation was a fun adventure to the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia. Tom used to go there when he worked at LaSalle, but I had never been. We took the regional rail to Allen Lane, then it was just a few blocks walk to Germantown Ave.
Our lunch destination was Chef Ken’s Cafe, which we had learned about after seeing it on The Layover. It turned out that Chef Ken’s was opening late that day due to a lunchtime catering gig, so we had about an hour to kill before eating. We went next door to The Juice Room and had a few drinks to hold us over. I had La Playa (carrot, beet, apple, ginger, lime) and Tom had Immune #2 (carrot, orange, ginger). We continued to walk up and down Germantown Ave, seeing such sights as the local public library.
We made our way back to Chef Ken’s and couldn’t wait to eat, especially since we could smell the food from outside. We ordered two combos to share – one with BBQ chicken, collards, and mac and cheese, and the other with beef ribs, yams, and red beans & rice. We enjoyed our food on the back patio. Everything was great, but I especially loved the ribs, which had a sweet BBQ sauce, the collards (which included cabbage), and the yams. At $11 per combo, that was a great deal and a lot of delicious food.
Our next stop was Earth Bread + Brewery, a place I had been wanting to try even before moving to Philadelphia. They make their own beer and sodas, as well as flatbreads made from local, natural spelt, prepared in their hand-built wood-fired oven. In general they operate with a locally focused, sustainable philosophy, which applies both to their food and drinks as well as to their facilities. They had four signature beers available, so we each had two so that we could try them all. The beers were delicious, and the service was excellent. We look forward to going back to try their food!
We ended the night with cocktails at Rex 1516, which is our regular Thursday night place. As usual, we had a nice evening with bartender Sweet Lou, manager Heather, and the rest of the lovely staff. Day 1 was a full day, and staycation was off to a great start!
